Leaving Mumbai early pays off. You will avoid the traffic and reach the hill station early enough to start an active day. You will check in to a charming hotel and go for some sightseeing. Not far from Lonvala there are special caves not to be missed. Karla and Bhaja caves are a Buddhist extraordinary example of rock-cut architecture. Karla Caves were created by Hinayana Buddhists in the 1st century BCE and have been later taken over by Hinayana sect. They are the best example of this special building and sculpting technique in the region. Outside there is a small Koli Temple, where you can observe religious rituals of Koli fisherfolk dancing in a trance and then sacrificing a goat or couple of chickens. Opposite to Karla caves are the Bhaja Caves. Situated few kilometers up are very well preserved and date back to 2nd century BCE. After you will continue the trip through a dense forest, dotted with numerous waterfalls towards your true haven. Near the Mulhsi dam one can enjoy a free afternoon and evening in a resort among lush greenery with great food and SPA treatments. You deserve it!

Mulhsi, nestled among the folds of Sahyadri range is a scenic place for a city getaway. In the rustic mountain resort you can truly relax, enjoy the panorama of green hills around and benefit from excellent SPA treatments. Take a nature walk around and spot the wildlife hiding between the tree branches. In the evening a bonfire will set you in a dreamy mood.

There are few Shivaji’s forts around that deserve paying a visit. Pack some water and snacks, put comfortable shoes on and take a hike up to the Dhangad and Koraigad forts. After an active day relax in the resort and try the real Maharashtra cuisine.

Leave your little heaven early in the morning to experience something that will increase the adrenaline level in your veins. Today is rafting day! Kundalika river is a small, relatively unknown yet extremely beautiful river of Maharahstra. You will go on a super exciting two hours of rafting along 11 km with grades from 2 to 3. Each participant receives his own rafting gear (life jackets, pedals, helmets), gets instructions from the guide about all the rafting commands and techniques and starts the fun! It’s a great time full of excitement while as a team you negotiate the rapids, body surf, swim… Later that day stay in local cozy cottages set in the forest just next to the river. All powered by solar energy with home grown Ayurvedic herbs is a simple, eco-friendly option for you. You can continue playing with the river here, do kayaking, river crossing or flying fox and finish the days with a bonfire. If you feel like rafting is enough of adventure for this trip you can choose an overnight stay in one of the more luxurious resorts on the coast in Murud.

On the last day on the way back up to Mumbai stop on the Konkan coast to see unique forts. You will visit Murud-Janjira, port town on the Arabian Sea coast. You are going there because of some pretty amazing, invincible medieval fort. Janjira Fort having its name originating from an Arabic word Zizera – an island, is indeed a massive free standing fortress on a single rock in the sea. The only way to get there is on a sailing boat where you will get to know about its turbulent past. In response to this challenging structure build by Siddis, the Marathas commissioned the Padmadurg Fort as a counter strategy. Located on a rock called Kasa a mile into the sea, this fort saw some fierce battles between the Siddis and Marathas. Use your imagination, look around while sailing towards the fortress and see all that old times sea trade tumult and piracy played in dead earnest. On the way back relax in the car. You are going back to the maximum city.
