RISHIKESH – A PLACE TO BE on International Yoga Day

‘Yoga Capital of the world’, ‘River Rafting Capital of India’, ‘The Gateway to the Garhwal Himalayas’… place where saints and sages have been coming in search of higher knowledge since ancient times, where peace seekers from all over the world find inspiration, where adventurous travelers get the thrill, where Prince Charles finds unity with nature. Only 6 hours drive from India’s hectic capital – Rishikesh is a perfect city escape destination.

Nestled between foothills of Himalayas along the holy Ganga River, Rishikesh is dispersed with innumerable temples and ashrams. Yoga lovers constantly visit Rishikesh throughout the year to practice the ancient techniques for relaxation, spiritual growth and meditation. They learn to live healthy life and learn asanas and kriyas. By law selling alcohol and meat here is prohibited- Rishikesh is a holy city where evening religious ceremonies ‘Aarti’ on the river banks take place every day and where pilgrims from all over India and world come to worship Lord Vishnu – ‘lord of the senses’.

According to many Hindu yogis, this riverside stretch is of spiritual and religious importance, as the Ganges takes its form only after the confluence of rivers Bhagirathi and Alaknanda at Devprayag in the Garhwal Himalayas and reaches the plains in Rishikesh, as the holy river Ganges. Saints and yogis have been meditating on the banks of Ganges since antiquity.

Over the years Rishikesh gained fame among tourists, travelers, artists, movie makers etc. It became a center of yoga and meditation, center for ayurvedic treatments and great destination for adventurous sports.
